About ExifClean

ExifClean is a set of browser-based tools for reading and removing EXIF metadata from photos — the hidden data cameras and phones embed in every image file: GPS coordinates, device make and model, timestamps, and sometimes the photographer's name. The EXIF Remover strips it, the Metadata Viewer lets you inspect it field by field before deciding what to do, and the Privacy Checker flags which fields in a specific photo are actually sensitive.

All three run entirely client-side. An image dropped into the upload zone is decoded and processed in your browser's memory using JavaScript — it's never sent to a server, so there's no upload step to intercept and nothing for us to log or store. That's not a policy promise, it's just how the tool is built; you can confirm it yourself by opening your browser's network tab while processing a photo.

The site is built and maintained by a small team (see the FAQ below for how we handle bug reports and feature requests). It's supported by Google AdSense on the three tool pages — see our Privacy Policy for exactly where ads run and what data that involves.

How do I report a bug or technical issue?
Email [email protected] with your browser and OS version, the image format you were processing, and — if you can — the exact metadata field that misbehaved. "It didn't work" takes us a lot longer to track down than "GPS altitude showed as NaN on a HEIC from an iPhone 14."
What's your typical response time?
Within 48 hours for bug reports and security issues, usually sooner. Feature requests and general questions can take a bit longer since this is a small operation — we read everything, we just don't always reply fast.
Do you accept responsible disclosure for security issues?
Yes. If you find a way for the site to leak metadata it shouldn't, or a way to break the "nothing leaves your browser" guarantee, email [email protected] with "security" in the subject line rather than filing it as a public bug report. We'll credit you in the fix notes unless you'd rather stay anonymous.
Can I request a new tool or feature?
Yes — same address, [email protected]. Batch processing and a video-metadata stripper are the two most requested so far and are actually on the roadmap; anything else, tell us the specific situation you ran into and we'll weigh it against what else is in the queue.
I'm a journalist or researcher who needs to strip metadata from a large batch — can you help directly?
The tool itself only handles one image at a time right now, but if you're working under a deadline or source-protection pressure, email us and describe the situation — we may be able to point you to a faster workaround than clicking "Upload another" fifty times.
